Priest urges public: Don’t take febris from quake-damaged Bantayan church

A Catholic priest has appealed to the public to refrain from taking debris from the quake-damaged Saints Peter and Paul Parish Church in Bantayan Island, Cebu, warning that such acts are considered theft.

Fr. Edmar Marcellones, parish priest of the centuries-old church, reminded visitors that every fragment from the damaged structure is part of the nation’s sacred heritage. “Every stone and material holds historical and spiritual value. Let us allow the experts to handle the restoration,” he said.

The 6.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Cebu and nearby provinces on September 30 caused major damage to the church’s pediment and cross, prompting authorities to close it to the public for safety reasons. Heritage and conservation experts have since conducted a rapid assessment, beginning what Marcellones described as a “long, technical, and scientific process” of restoration.

The parish has opened a dedicated bank account for its Earthquake Repair Project, inviting donations to aid in rebuilding efforts. Masses are currently being held at the church grounds while the structure remains unsafe for use.

“We ask for your prayers and patience as we rebuild this sacred symbol of faith and history,” Fr. Marcellones said.
