Families must guide children, not phones – Cardinal Tagle

Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle urged parents and grandparents to strengthen family bonds and provide children with compassionate, values-based guidance amid growing concerns over school violence.

During Mass at the Parish Church of the Holy Sacrifice at the University of the Philippines Diliman on Wednesday, Tagle called on families to examine how children’s values are formed at home, following the fatal shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University.

Tagle warned that families may be physically together but emotionally distant when members focus more on their phones than on one another.

He also cautioned against allowing video games and artificial intelligence to shape children’s behavior without proper human guidance.

“AI has no heart, games have no heart. Only human beings have hearts,” Tagle said.

He urged families to reflect on what guides their words and actions, emphasizing the importance of staying close to Christ and extending compassion to those who are poor and struggling.
