Bureau of Customs clarifies baggage tag concerns

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has addressed public concerns over reports circulating online about alleged baggage tag switching at airports, clarifying that it has no role in baggage tagging operations and is not involved in the placement or switching of baggage tags.

In a statement issued on June 4, the BOC said there have been no confirmed cases of baggage tag switching reported in Philippine airports in recent months. According to the agency, the incidents being discussed online are believed to be linked to cases that occurred in other countries.

The bureau emphasized that its primary responsibility is the enforcement of customs laws and the protection of the country’s borders. While the reported incidents are not connected to local airport operations, the BOC said it remains vigilant and continues to coordinate with relevant authorities to help ensure passenger safety and security.

To help travelers protect their belongings, the agency encouraged passengers to take precautionary measures such as photographing their luggage before check-in, placing distinctive markers on their bags, and keeping track of their belongings throughout their journey. The use of luggage tracking devices was also suggested as an additional security measure.

The BOC reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining secure ports of entry and safeguarding the traveling public. It also urged passengers to stay informed, remain alert, and immediately report any unusual or suspicious activity to the appropriate authorities.

The bureau added that concerns and complaints may also be submitted through “Isumbong Kay Commissioner,” its platform for receiving reports from the public.
