Germany’s air travel sector is set for massive disruptions on Monday as the ver.di union launches a 24-hour strikeaffecting 11 major airports nationwide.
The strike, driven by an ongoing wage dispute, will impact key international hubs, including Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin-Brandenburg, along with Hamburg, Cologne-Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Stuttgart, Bremen, Hannover, and Leipzig/Halle.
Starting midnight Monday until 11:59 p.m. (local time), workers will also hold demonstrations throughout the day.
The union is demanding an 8% wage increase or a minimum monthly raise of €350 (USD 380), plus better pay for irregular working hours and three additional vacation days.
Union officials said the strike follows the failure of federal and municipal employers to present an offer in the latest round of negotiations. However, government negotiators have rejected the demands, citing economic constraints.
The next round of negotiations, set for late next week, will be crucial in determining whether a compromise can be reached to prevent further industrial action.
